SCAM ALERT: STATE WARNS PUBLIC ABOUT FRAUDULENT LETTERS IMITATING STATE AGENCY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 17, 2026
HONOLULU — The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) and Hawaiʻi Green Infrastructure Authority (HGIA), in partnership with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) Office of Consumer Protection, is alerting Hawai‘i residents to a series of fraudulent mailers that use HGIA’s name to imply legitimacy in home warranty and mortgage protection scams.
These misleading letters reference “Hawaii Green Infrastructure AU,” “Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority,” or other similar variations, and attempt to pressure homeowners into calling scam phone numbers related to fake “home warranty,” “mortgage protection” and other urgent property matters. The letters attempt to alarm homeowners by referencing final notices, county clerk record dates, or supposed warranty expiration deadlines.
The mailers do not originate from HGIA, which has no relationship with the companies or phone numbers listed on these notices. HGIA does not issue home warranty products, nor does it request personal information through unsolicited mailers.
If residents receive a suspicious letter, they should not call the phone number listed in the letters nor provide any personal, financial, or mortgage information. HGIA will only list its official office phone number, 808-587-3868 and its official email address, [email protected], in any communication with its program participants. Any communication that does not use these official channels should be treated as suspicious.
If you receive a suspicious letter claiming to be affiliated with HGIA, you may verify the legitimacy of the letter by contacting HGIA at 808-587-3868 or [email protected].
About the Hawai‘i Green Infrastructure Authority (HGIA)
HGIA, administratively attached to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), was constituted to democratize clean energy by making clean energy investment accessible and affordable to Hawai‘i’s underserved ratepayers, while stimulating private investments and leveraging innovative tools to mitigate risks and reach new markets. In addition to clean energy financing, HGIA provides credit enhancements and nontraditional financing to expand access to capital for small businesses and nonprofits statewide through the State Small Business Credit Initiative HI-CAP (Hawai‘i Capital Assistance Program); and administers the HI C-PACER (Hawai‘i’s Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy and Resiliency) financing program.
